Spirit's bankruptcy isn't a eulogy. It's a logistics story.

When Spirit ceased all flight operations, it didn't destroy demand. It vacated infrastructure — a carefully constructed web of leisure point-to-point routes connecting Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Las Vegas, and Cancún that took a decade and significant capital destruction to optimize. At its peak, Spirit was running roughly 200 aircraft across approximately 600 daily flights. That volume of demand doesn't disappear with the airline. It redirects. The route is a pipe. Spirit built the pipe. Someone else turns on the tap.

The economics here are blunt. Building a point-to-point leisure route from scratch means years of load-factor pain, price-seeding, and brand establishment in markets that don't know you exist. Stepping into a Spirit corridor means inheriting established demand, proven price elasticity, and a traveler base already conditioned to the ultra-low-cost model.

The structural beneficiaries are obvious: Frontier, Allegiant, and Sun Country. Each operates A320-family fleets, meaning crew qualifications and maintenance infrastructure transfer almost directly. No new type ratings. No unfamiliar MRO contracts. Frontier alone announced service across multiple former Spirit markets within days of the shutdown — deploying existing aircraft, not acquiring new capacity. The capital destruction phase had already happened. They skipped it.

Spirit's network also carries a specific competitive advantage its successors inherit for free: none of it depends on slot holdings at congested airports. These are slot-free markets. The barrier to entry for a replacement carrier is as low as it gets in commercial aviation.

The brutal irony is structural. Spirit's ultra-low-cost discipline — the obsessive focus on leisure routes, thin margins, slot-free simplicity — is precisely what makes its remains so easy to cannibalize. The rigor that defined the airline in life is what makes it valuable in death.
